Lest We Forget

Our Remembrance concert, organised jointly with Eltisley Parochial Church Council, was a great success with nearly 100 people – including the Cambridge University Brass Band – packed into Eltisley’s Parish Church of St Pandionia and St John the Baptist. The first part of the evening ended with a simple but moving re-dedication of the recently-restored Roll of Honour. Two young people from the village read the names of those villagers who gave their lives in the two World Wars and the perfectly played Last Post, the minute’s silence, Reveille and hymn were poignant reminders of the meaning of Remembrance Day.

The second half, after a break for a glass of wine and other refreshments, was more of a celebration and a thanksgiving. There were plenty of familiar foot-tapping marches and film themes and, finally, ‘Jerusalem,’ which got the whole audience singing and flagwaving. The evening was a wonderful mix of reflection, remembrance and celebration which was enjoyed by all.

And we mustn’t forget that we were raising funds for the urgently needed repairs to the tower and for the British Legion. The concert raised £650 for the Church and £135 for the British Legion. Our thanks to all who helped, played and made up our audience. ‘Lest We Forget’ was an ‘evening to remember’!
