Remembrance Weekend 2018
Sunday 11th of November is both Armistice day and Remembrance Sunday. It is fortuitous that both should fall on the same day as this year is also the Centenary of the end of the First World War. As you can imagine, the Eltisley History Society is going to be greatly involved in the village's commemoration.
On Saturday evening, 10th November, we will be holding a 'Street Party' in the Newton School Hall. This is going to be a light-hearted celebratory event to which people will be bringing party food and drink. The village's favourite band - the Cambridge University Brass Band - will be playing. There will a chance to sing along, and to dance if the mood takes you, to a selection of tunes. There will also be a demonstration of how the dancing should be done, given by Cambridge Swing Dance.
Tickets are £10 each. This is our first Fund Raiser for several years and we badly need money to cover our running costs which now exceed our income. Please encourage your friends and family to accompany you. There will also be a raffle - can you donate a prize ? All contributions will be gratefully received.
On Sunday morning the Remembrance Day Service will be held at St Pandionia's at 10.50am starting at the lych gate where the names of the Fallen will be read. In the church will be mounting our display showing the stories of the 16 men from the village who gave their lives during the two World Wars. The Roll of Honour will be retrieved from the archive and will also be on display.
We are gathering at 6.45pm by Beacon on the village green which, at 7 o'clock, will be lit as part of the national 'Battle's Over' events marking the end of the First World War. From the Beacon there will be a procession carrying 16 candles, one for each of our Fallen, to the Stone by the Peace Tree. There will be a short ceremony followed by the playing of the Last Post.
And to mark the end of a successful weekend - the bar in the Cade will be open and light refreshments will be available!
